Design & Electronics Engineering

Our team of creative problem solvers specializes in custom electronic design services and finding solutions to even the most puzzling printed circuit board (PCB) challenges.

What are electronics design services?

Behind every piece of electrical technology is a foundation of electronic design. Essentially, electronic design refers to the creation of structured and reliable electronic circuits. The development of any electronic product begins with setting specific goals for the final product.

Early in the design process, we determine if the final design will be well served by some level of a microprocessor (uP), as most modern designs are, and which level of uP will be used — from minor capabilities to major processing power.

Next steps include the iterative process of hardware design and schematic design. Hardware development is informed by the abilities of the selected uP. As we select hardware components and develop circuit design, we also work on designing and coding the firmware.

Ultimately, these carefully designed components are hand-placed on a PCB, resulting in a final circuit design that is specially tailored to your project goals. We use the PCB to interconnect the designed-in components so that they fit into the end product.

What is a PCB and circuit board assembly?

PCBs are the backbone of most of the electronic devices we use every day. From smartphones and computers to microwaves and modern cars, PCBs keep the electronic world around us working. Nearly every electronic device around you began with the creation of an electronic design that was implemented through the assembly of a PCB.

A printed circuit board is a physical board made from a non-conductive material with one or multiple layers of carefully designed conductive pathways that connect electronic components, resulting in a current flowing between components and, thus, a functioning device.

For any new electronic device, first comes an idea, followed by an electronic design implemented in a PCB design, and then circuit board assembly — only then can these pieces come together to create a final, developed product.

How We Deliver Above Average Outcomes in Our Electronic Design Services

Thoughtful Electronics Design

Our projects always begin with a conversation to understand your vision before we dive into design. Our team is experienced in both large and small volume production, so we optimize designs for production from the earliest stage. DFM, or Design for Manufacturing, is a vital step in any of our electronic designs. We craft products from scratch with intention and your end goals in mind.

The circuit design process starts with schematic design. Think of this as the blueprint for your PCB. As we work on both analog and digital schematic design, we determine a plan for routing and placing hardware that will ultimately bring your vision to life. Once we have created a physical design and placed all the components on the printed circuit board, we test to ensure we have crafted a working circuit.

Trusted Software

Because reliable design starts with reliable tools, we use engineer-trusted software tools to ensure precise results. Altium is our electronic design automation software for PCB design and layout in all of our projects. We also use LTspice, the most widely used SPICE software, as our analog electronic circuit simulator software tool.

Reliable Firmware

Firmware design is an integral step in this process, and refers to specially programmed software that relates specifically to the hardware (aka, physical components) and controls the operation of the final device. Firmware is planned during the design phase and then implemented and tested during product development.

Experienced Turnkey Electronic Manufacturing

Our experienced team can create a PCB for your product, and leave the rest to you. But we also offer full product development and electronics manufacturing services. From PCB design to drop shipping the finished product to your customers — and all the steps in between — Above Average Outcomes is an all-in-one firm dedicated to transforming your ideas into profits.

Electronics Product Development & Testing

With more than 50 years of experience in product development for electronics, we offer comprehensive prototyping and testing services all in one place.

What is included in product development for electronics?

In the product development phase, we truly bring your idea to life. We transform electronic components connected on a circuit board into functional, complex final products. In product development for electronics, we write hardware specifications and code firmware (specially programmed software that controls the hardware/physical components of the device). In this phase, we may also finalize the design of the product’s appearance as well as the packaging for shipment.

Above Average Electronic Product Development and Prototyping Services

Well-Rounded Product Development

With five decades of transforming ideas into prototypes or marketable products, we are experts in product development engineering. At Above Average Outcomes, we offer product specification development, embedded processor design and coding, product appearance design, and shipment packing design. Our expert team develops engineering specifications for hardware and writes software or firmware, resulting in reliable and often game-changing final products.

Improved Processing Power

In addition to our circuit board assembly services, we offer rework services to modify and improve existing circuit boards. We specialize in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Through-Hole Technology (THT) in printed circuit boards, both proven and reliable electronic assembly techniques. With our SMT expertise, we can modify PCBs for higher performance, tighter layouts, and automated circuit board assembly.

In our THT work, we hand-place components, placing leads through the holes before soldering leads to pads on the PCB’s opposite side. THT provides reliable connections and stronger mechanical bonds than SMT work, and is ideal for bulky or heavy components, or for creating prototypes.

A Standard of Excellence

All of our product development and electronics manufacturing services adhere to the current revision of IPC-A-610, which is the universal electronic assembly acceptance standard. We can build to any of the three tiers of criteria, depending on your product and needs. From basic or general consumer electronics in Class 1 to the highest standards of Class 3 for the utmost reliability — vital for medical devices, aerospace equipment, and other mission-critical industries — we are experienced in developing high-quality, high-performance products.

But our team doesn’t stop there; we also offer flexible electronic product manufacturing options to get the final product into your customers’ hands while ensuring quality and keeping costs low.

Electronics Manufacturing

We offer flexible, reliable, turnkey electronic manufacturing services that make sense for your business.

Small-Scale Electronics Manufacturing with Above Average Outcomes

We’re more than a design firm; we’re your problem-solving partners, solutions directors, and electronics engineering headquarters. Unlike most electronic design service firms, we also offer full in-house electronic product manufacturing services, allowing our clients to complete start-to-finish projects entirely under one roof — ours.

Our turnkey electronic manufacturing services are flexible and cost-effective. We offer small-scale production services, meaning you can order what you need, when you need it. No minimums or lock-ins. Our ability to build products on an as-needed basis sets us apart from larger manufacturers and is an ideal choice for small businesses and entrepreneurs. We also offer cooperative order fulfillment and work with trustworthy, reliable American manufacturers to fulfill higher volume orders.
