Don Colvin
Chief Engineer
With more than 50 years of electronic engineering experience, Don’s career began in the Army as a cryptographic electronics technician. After his honorable discharge from the military, he worked for the Tally Corporation, Automix Keyboards Inc., and International Entry Systems Inc. before setting out on his first business venture in the 1980s.
The decades that followed included running a successful engineering firm, transforming countless ideas into reality, and even establishing a few patents along the way. Eventually, his work evolved into Above Average Outcomes (AAO), where Don’s passions for creative engineering and helping small businesses combined. AAO launched in September 2009 with one simple goal — to offer quality electronics design services and small-scale manufacturing at affordable rates.
Don’s love for electronics began at a young age. By the 6th grade, his interest turned useful as he took up repairing tube-type table radios. In 7th grade, Don created his first design from scratch and built a prototype: a 3-tube audio amplifier that actually worked! His passion for electronics was fueled by the help of trusty mentors — a neighbor who worked for GTE, and a friend’s father who maintained communications radios for Everett’s first responders. The mentorship of these men, namely their kind willingness to share knowledge and expertise, has become a foundational principle of Don’s business practice.
With a friendly, helpful, and eager attitude, Don loves connecting with clients to find creative and practical solutions to challenging design puzzles. He specializes in analog and digital electronic development; digitization of analog sensors; motion control using electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic motors and actuators; and designing automated production test systems. His out-of-the-box approach allows him to discover new and cutting-edge design solutions. No matter the design idea, Don has a fervor for turning concepts into tangible, viable realities.
That belief in blending precision with creativity is well captured by engineer and author Henry Petroski in his book To Engineer Is Human: “Engineers must fuse scientific knowledge with creative judgment and imagination.”
Unplugging
When he’s not enthralled in his latest engineering project, Don enjoys flying small planes, camping in the wilderness, and big game animal hunting. With a strong desire to help others, he also spends his off time flying search missions.
