Industry: Coal Mining
Location: Renton, WA

The Problem

It’s no news that the coal mining industry is filled with significant risks and potential for disaster. Air quality in underground mines has a profound impact on miners’ immediate and long-term health. Low oxygen levels and the presence of hazardous gases can create life-threatening conditions in underground mines, and discovering the presence of such gases too late can be lethal. Our client sought a reliable and portable solution to monitor air quality and issue warnings swiftly to miners if the air quality reaches unsafe levels.

Our Solution

With our clients’ end goal in mind, we developed the “Canary,” a battery-powered air quality monitor designed specifically for underground coal mines. This device captures available oxygen levels and detects the presence of hazardous gases, issuing an audible alarm when air conditions become unsafe for humans. The Canary alerts miners immediately after detecting unsafe air quality, providing miners with the ability to take action quickly and eliminating some of the inherent risks associated with their work.
