The Problem
The ability to measure tongue strength and control helps speech therapists accurately diagnose patients and justify treatment plans. When a measurement device is inconsistent, it is challenging for therapists to identify root issues as well as track progress, which motivates patients and proves success. IOPI sought our electronic design services in hopes of producing a more reliable, sanitary, and easy-to-use tongue pressure measurement device.
Our Solution
We designed hardware and custom-wrote embedded code to create an accurate device consisting of a sanitary flexible bulb linked to a plastic tube, sensors, and an instrument. The result: a final product that provides consistent readings. Patients place the bulb into their mouth and apply pressure with their tongue, while the instrument performs multiple tests, including measuring maximum tongue pressure, tongue pressure modulation, and steady tongue pressure duration. These readings provide speech therapists with the tools they need to improve speech through muscle exercise therapy.
