The Problem

The ability to measure horsepower, acceleration, speed, and drag is vital in the world of high-performance racing. High-performance vehicle testing requires real-time data to measure these metrics in a moving car, and these figures are essential for optimal tuning and performance. DynoLab sought experts in electronics engineering to develop an on-board dynamometer capable of delivering easy-to-read, multimodal measurements directly from a moving vehicle.

Our Solution

We partnered with DynoLab to design, code, and manufacture the company’s On-Board Dynamometer, mounted directly into the vehicle. The instrument accurately captures Gross Horsepower, Acceleration, Deceleration, Speed, Frictional Drag, and Aerodynamic Drag — all in real-time. The device features the ability to connect a PC laptop to the data port, allowing for continuous data recording. To ensure accuracy, we developed a simple calibration method tailored to each vehicle’s unique parameters, including viscous and aerodynamic drag. The resulting developed product empowers optimal tuning and performance through reliable vehicle testing.

I have worked with Don Colvin of Above Average Outcomes since 1983. As an analog engineer, I relied on Don’s digital expertise to convert my original analog On-Board Dynamometer (U.S. Patent 4,603,582) into a microcontroller-based digital system.

Don developed the system architecture and firmware, helped bring up a successful prototype, and then transitioned the design into full production. The resulting digital On-Board Dynamometer significantly outperformed the original design and is now used in high-performance and racing vehicles worldwide.

Above Average Outcomes also continues to provide me with pre-production SMD population of prototype PCBs to full production of products, including my Dynolab LDPA3A and LDPA4A LDMOS Amplifiers.
