Two apartment buildings severely damaged from an earthquake with the buildings leaning into each other.

Industry: Consumer, Early Warning Home Appliance
Location: Burien, WA

The Problem

When an earthquake strikes, early detection is key. P-waves, or primary waves, travel faster than S-waves, or secondary waves. While P-waves hit early, they cause little destruction. S-waves are those responsible for the damage associated with these natural disasters. Detecting P-waves before the danger of S-waves arrives can be life or death for residents in earthquake-prone areas. Our client wanted to develop a precise P-wave sensor to market as an essential early warning home appliance; they knew just who to turn to for consistent and reliable product development and manufacturing.

Our Solution

We coded software and designed hardware to read a 3-axis accelerometer, which quickly and accurately measures vibration changes along three different directions: left-right, forward-backward, and up-down. Our design could evaluate the physical disturbance of the sensor and provide accurate and prompt early detection of P-waves, resulting in a product that gives people the vital time they need in emergencies to take cover.
